Counseling and Support Services

Because adoptive and foster families experience unique challenges, they also require adoption-competent therapists. Whether you just started the adoption process, have an adopted child with special needs as they grow, or you’re looking for the right therapist to help support your adopted child and family, our team of adoption-competent, trauma-informed professionals is here for you.

FamilyWorks Together provides individual and family mental health counseling to children, youth, adults and families, using an attachment focused, adoption competent, and trauma responsive model as well as support groups for children, youth and families. We offer our therapeutic services in home and in our offices located in Washington, DC, Alexandria, VA, Baltimore, MD, and Calverton, MD. In addition, for clients who live outside of the immediate area to one of our offices, we offer Telehealth services, which allows us to do counseling sessions via HIPPA compliant video.

Each of our therapists have a master’s level education and professionally licensed in the jurisdiction where they are providing services. Some of our therapists are bilingual in Spanish and English. Our therapists are experienced in working with a variety of individuals and families, have expertise in foster care, adoption, attachment, trauma, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), child and adolescent development, and family dynamics. FamilyWorks Together also has therapists who can assist children, adolescents, and adults who identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community. Our team are trained to provide culturally competent care for the LGBTQ+ community and are committed to creating a supportive, healing space. Specific behavioral health providers are also available to assist persons identifying as transgender or gender non-conforming with gender affirming mental health care. Our greatest hope is you feel welcome, safe, and truly cared for at FamilyWorks Together.

Our therapists will actively involve you in treatment, assist you to tune into your needs or your child or adolescent’s needs, interpret your child or adolescent’s language, help to strength you and your child’s inner resilience and increase attachment between you and your child. We offer a variety of proven therapeutic approaches to help you and your child on their journey towards well-being and work alongside you to find the best solution.
